Interia
Interia, developed for NOBIS in Ümraniye, Istanbul, brings design, production and retail together on a single 110,000 m² site. The ambition was to create a destination for Turkish furniture manufacturing — one of the country's flagship industrial sectors — rather than another showroom, and to make the sector's own processes visible to the people who buy from it.
With a 210-metre frontage on Nato Caddesi, the building relies on its facade to register at the speed of the road. A reflective, double-curved surface catches a different part of the spectrum as the angle of light changes, so the perception of the elevation shifts through the day. At the centre of the front facade a glass box interrupts it, shimmering and translucent, marking the entrance and drawing visitors inside.
Internally the complex is organised around three large skylit courtyards, linked by internal streets with information points and controlled lighting. Design, research and development occupy the top floor, while education and practice workshops, conference facilities and exhibition halls bring designer, producer and consumer into the same building — the exchange that makes the project a centre rather than a warehouse.
