Mardin City Library
The site lies in the area Mardin knows as the new city, in the valley at the entrance of the main artery arriving from Kızıltepe, on a parcel neighbouring the Hilton and within a district of schools and dormitories. The 10,000 m² library was commissioned by Mardin Municipality with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as part of a wider programme to remake provincial libraries as everyday social and cultural centres rather than repositories for books.
A steep change in level across the site is turned into the building's organising principle, distributing the programme around a vertical axis. The foundation is anchored at −5.00, with a floor plate of 1,680 m². At entrance level are the children's, elderly and accessible reading rooms together with a café, lounge and information desk; the floor above holds the main reading and research hall and the administration. Open shelving and active working areas wrap the atrium continuously from −5.00 to entrance level, and this vertical section is the core of the project.
Above ground the building answers Mardin's distinctive topography and building culture in stone and glass, worked as though the mass had been carved out of the hillside. The project was developed with local architects, whose knowledge of the city informed both the siting and the detail.
