Healthcare Workers Memorial
The memorial was designed for a national competition held by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in 2021, for a 16,250 m² site in Cumhuriyet Parkı, Şişli. The brief asked for a place to commemorate those lost to epidemics and the healthcare workers who cared for them, on ground surrounded by the historic health infrastructure of Beyoğlu and Şişli and in a city with a long memory of its own epidemics.
The proposal worked at the scale of the park rather than of the monument, constructing a sequence through the site in which memory and landscape are read together. A spherical volume anchors the composition, with the figure of the mask carried through the scheme as its central motif.
Twenty-two offices applied, eight teams were selected through pre-selection and seven schemes were submitted. The project received the first honourable mention; the jury noted the strength of its urban-scale narrative of memory and place. The team brought together the architects with a sculptor and a graphic designer, and was advised by a landscape architect, a sociologist and a physician.
